The stronger system sparked by a slow-moving cold front is on track for Sunday afternoon, July 9 into Sunday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
Between 2 and 3 inches of rainfall is expected in areas shown in darker green in the first image above from AccuWeather.com. Locally higher amounts are possible.
"Showers and thunderstorms on Sunday will be capable of producing heavy downpours," the National Weather Service said in a Hazardous Weather Outlook statement issued Saturday morning. "This may result in flooding of urban, low-lying or poor drainage areas, and small streams and creeks.
"At this time, the best chance for heavy rainfall will be Sunday afternoon and night as a frontal wave along a stalled-out boundary potentially moves into the area.
"There is still a decent amount of uncertainty where the axis of heaviest rainfall will set up."
Saturday, July 8 will be mostly cloudy with some sun at times and a high temperature in the mid-80s amid humid conditions.
There could be scattered storms in the afternoon and evening with the potential for heavy rain in a few of the storms on Saturday. (Click on the second image above,)
On Sunday, there should be scattered showers in the morning before showers, and storms become likely starting in the middle of the afternoon into the night as the system barrels through.
"Rainfall rates could reach 2 inches per hour in some locations as the system moves along on Sunday from the southern Appalachians and mid-Atlantic to eastern New York and central and western New England from Sunday night to early Monday," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty said.
Sunday's high temperature will generally be around 80 degrees.
Clouds will linger on Monday, July 10 with showers likely and scattered storms possible at any point during the day and night. The high temperature will be around 80 degrees.
The unsettled stretch will end on Tuesday, July 11, which will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the mid-80s.
The mercury will climb to a high of around 90 degrees on Wednesday, July 12 with plenty of sunshine.
